National Heritage Lottery Grant Award

Funding from The National Lottery Heritage Fund to shape a vision for the future at Leeds Castle.

Made possible with Heritage Fund

About the Project

Leeds Castle Foundation is on a mission to shape a new vision for the future of one of England’s most cherished landmarks that will preserve history, promote accessibility and provide outstanding experiences for generations to come.

A generous first grant of £225,700 was awarded by The National Lottery Heritage Fund in January 2024. The funding will pave the way for several transformative initiatives aimed at enhancing sustainability, accessibility and overall visitor experience.

It will also contribute to the charity’s work in building a new business model that will secure the future of the precious heritage assets in its care for public benefit including creating a greener, more sustainable place to visit.

Aims of the Project

One of our four strategic priorities is to welcome and engage everyone in our work, whatever their abilities or means. There has been limited investment made to date on accessibility and changing this is a key area of focus through this project.

Our aspiration is to transform our charity into an exemplar of local community participation in heritage and a green lung for mental and physical well-being in a densely populated, highly built-up part of the U.K.

We also want to reduce our energy usage and carbon footprint and will be commissioning a specialist consultant to advise on this, including our best options for switching to renewable sources of energy across the estate. Developing green transport links to reduce traffic congestion and encourage more use of public transport is also on our radar.

We’re also aiming to develop major conservations projects and to increase the involvement of our visitors and communities in our work through visitor experiences and skills training.

What we hope to achieve.

This funding from the Heritage Fund will play a pivotal role in shaping the long-term sustainability and vision for Leeds Castle.

We want to create a new financially and environmentally sustainable and resilient business model that allows the widest possible access for our communities, so that we can be a place of retreat, relaxation and escape for generations to come.

We are at the start of our journey and to achieve the huge potential that Leeds Castle offers, we need to review where we are and where we need to get to.

We have a number of key ambitions for the project, including:

  • To evaluate how we take the next step across all areas of our charity to make us more welcoming and inclusive.
  • To be more sustainable and more resilient as an organisation and adapt to a new way of working as a charity.
